Through my work supporting people with their heart health, I’m reminded time and again that small, consistent changes really do matter. Here are my five top heart-healthy reminders for the year ahead:
1 Get checked and know your numbers
Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight and waist measurement, these numbers matter. You can’t change what you don’t know, and early awareness is one of the most powerful tools for prevention.
2 Keep moving in a way you enjoy
You don’t need to run marathons. Walking, cycling, swimming, gardening or dancing all count. Regular movement supports your heart, circulation and overall wellbeing.
3 Eat for your heart, not perfection
Focus on whole foods, plenty of vegetables, fruit, fibre and healthy fats. It’s about consistency and nourishment, not being perfect.
4 Look after stress and sleep
Ongoing stress and poor sleep don’t just make you feel tired, they increase stress hormones and inflammation in the body, both of which directly affect heart health. Rest, recovery and good sleep are essential parts of caring for your heart.
5 Ask for support
You don’t have to do this alone. Whether it’s a health professional or a supportive community, having the right support can make all the difference.
Heart health isn’t about doing everything at once, it’s about taking informed, manageable steps that add up over time.
